Synthetic hair extensions are made of nylon, polyester, or modacrylic. Because these materials can melt when then come into contact with a curling iron or a blow dryer, they are used primarily in hair extensions that add trendy colors like lipstick reds, orchid purples, and iridescent blues to the hair. Human Hair

Extensions applied in a salon by a professional extensionist are made of human hair which can be curled, treated, colored, and set just like natural hair. Weaving

In the application of extensions through weaving, a small track (or cornrow) is braided around the head and close to the scalp. The extensions are sewn on to this track with the natural hair lying across the track. When the extensions and natural hair are combed and blended, the track is no longer visible.

With the weaving technique, some concerns do arise. The track base creates tension on the natural hair and weight can be unevenly distributed depending on the number of extensions and the areas in which they are attached.

Weave extensions are not particularly durable when wet and have a tendency to weaken and tug at the natural hair increasing the chance of breakage. It also becomes difficult to dry the hair which leads people to not shampoo as often as they should, opening the door for bacteria to build up on the scalp and for scalp infections and irritations to develop.
