What are Hair Conditioners?
Unlike shampoos that in theory exist to simply clean the hair, conditioners are applied to improve some aspect of the hair after it has been washed. For instance a conditioner may be used to moisturize dry hair, work as an agent to prevent tangling, protect the hair from the heat of blow drying or curling, or to provide body to limp hair.

There are many so-called "two in one" products that promise to both cleanse and to condition the hair but some of the chemicals required to achieve each separate purpose may actually contradict one another. It is as important to read the ingredients contained in your conditioner as it is to investigate those in your shampoo.

Increasingly hair care specialists advocate a return to herbal based conditioner treatments. Many homemade hair conditioner recipes call for something as simple as rosemary essential oil mixed with olive oil which is then worked into the dampened hair and covered with a warm towel for 45 minutes to an hour.

When Do I Use A Conditioner?

Many people believe that they must use a shampoo and a conditioner every day to keep their hair healthy and manageable. Normally, however, this is not the case. Conditioning once a week works very well for most people unless your hair is damaged either by harsh hair products or as the result of an illness. If you use a "two in one" product, a combination shampoo and conditioner, you should use a normal cleansing shampoo at least once a week to prevent a build-up of chemicals on your hair.

How to Maintain Healthy Hair

The condition of the hair is reflective of the overall lifestyle. Non-smokers who eat a balanced diet and who exercise regularly should have healthy and manageable hair. Minimize the use of hair sprays, gels, and the like. These products contain alcohols that will contribute to the drying of both the hair and the scalp.

Daily shampooing will normally not harm your hair but professionals recommend washing your hair on alternate days as the optimum routine. Some also suggest switching or alternating shampoos to avoid build up. Always pour shampoo into your hands and then work it through already wet hair. The water should be at a comfortable temperature but not too hot. Dry your hair gently with a towel and avoid blow drying if at all possible.

When conditioner is used, shampoo your hair first, then apply the conditioner and distribute it evenly through your hair with a wide-toothed comb. If you are using a commercial product, leave the conditioner in for at least five minutes before rinsing your hair. You may condition your hair as often as you like but always be cautious to avoid build-up from commercial products. A once a week conditioning is most likely adequate unless you have problem hair (a tendency toward "frizz" or tangles.)

Always be aware of the ingredients present in both your shampoo and your conditioner. If you are using a hair loss shampoo, make sure that no chemicals are present that are actually inhibiting rather than enabling hair growth. Shampoo should be selected based on the type of hair of the individual and for the safety and effectiveness of its ingredients.
