Oral and Hair Loss Topical Treatments

The most popular oral treatments for hair loss in men are PropeciaŠ and ProscarŠ. Both are finasteride with the difference being strength of dosage, 5mg for ProscarŠ and 1mg as PropeciaŠ.
Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor which stops the male hormone testosterone from converting into its more potent form (DHT), which is thought to cause male pattern baldness.

Although women can also suffer from hair loss and baldness these drugs are not appropriate for women as they cause birth defects. In fact, women should not even handle these medications. You will require a prescription from a dermatologist or from your general physician to obtain either of these drugs.

Revivogen is a hair loss topical treatment which, when applied to the scalp, is also thought to block the damage from DHT. It is believed to stimulate the growth of new hair and to make the hair that is present thicker. It has no systemic side effects and can be purchased in beauty supply outlets or online. Women can safely use Revivogen.

Another topical product, Rogaine, the brand name for minoxidil, has also shown temporary success with male pattern baldness. The over-the-counter formulation is applied daily to promote growth and to prevent further hair loss. The 2% solution of Rogaine may be used by both men and women but the 5% solution is appropriate for men only.
Laser Hair Restoration
Although popular in Europe, there is great debate over the effectiveness of laser hair restoration via devices known as laser combs. Normally these devices are available at hair clinics or spas and users are charged for individual treatments. The low level laser is used just like a traditional brush or comb and is believed to stimulate the scalp and to thicken the hair and to improve its texture. Laser combs can be used by both men and women but the jury is still out as to their effectiveness.

Life after Surgery

In the final analysis the most reliable and successful form of permanent hair restoration is surgery. After the initial post-operative care, there are no special requirements to tend transplanted hair or to care for hair that has been stretched into place via reduction or expansion methods. The patient can return to their normal habits and preferred products and treat their hair as they always have.

Surgical hair restoration has grown increasingly successful and refined from the 1980s forward. While perhaps inconvenient in the short term with time off from work and other activities, there is a reasonably short recovery period and the benefits are for the long term. Medical hair restoration via surgery has a high success rate and is the only permanent solution for baldness.
