Hair Styling Based on the Shape of your Face

The real key to an attractive hair style is to match the cut to the shape of your face. There are seven basic facial shapes: oval, round, square, rectangular, heart, pear (or triangle) and diamond.
Different hair styles will suit different faces. If you can't decide between oval and round, for instance, talk with your hair care professional or with an aesthetician. Choosing a style based on the shape of your face is absolutely essentially. You want a cut that highlights the best aspects of your features and downplays any negative, problem areas.
Hair Styles for Oval Faces
A face is said to be oval when the area at the jaw is just noticeably narrower than at the temple. The hairline for oval faces itself will be gently and consistently rounded. Considered by many to be the perfect facial configuration, people with oval faces have the most balanced features and essentially can wear any style they choose, even the dramatic "slicked back" looks. Generally, oval featured women will look best when the hair is kept off the face. Don't hide your features behind bangs. If you are not satisfied try and experiment with more hair styles for oval faces.

Round Faces Need Full Cuts
A round face is one that is widest at the cheek and ears with symmetrical curves at the chin and hairline. Full hair styles with off-center parts and height at the crown of the head compliment round faces. Layer the top of the style and keep the rest of the hair close to the face. This will serve make the face seem longer. Avoid chin length cuts and center parts, crops, and straight bangs.
Gentle Waves for the Square Face
Square faces have strong, "lantern" jaws, wide foreheads, and pronounced hairlines. They need short to medium cuts with some round styling and wispy bangs to add curvature to the features. Use off center parts and height at the crown. Soften straight hair with a wavy perm. Avoid straight styles and don't wear your hair long. Straight bangs and a part in the center won't work for you either.
Rectangular Faces Need Medium Length
If you have a high forehead with a well defined jaw and chin, you have a rectangular face. Consider short hair styles falling on a line with the chin or seek a medium length near the shoulders. The idea is to soften your features and disguise the length of your face. Wispy bangs and fullness at the sides are a good idea as is layering and the use of side parts. Don't go long or part your hair in the center. Both serve to accentuate the length of your facial features.
Bobs for the Heart
The wide foreheads and small chins of heart-shaped faces pair nicely with layered bob cuts that have good volume. A side part is best, as is sweeping the hair forward toward the upper face. Wispy bangs are good. The shorter your hair, the more weight you need to leave at the nape to balance out the dramatic effect of your cheekbones. Avoid styles that emphasize the upper face and slicked back looks.
For the Pear or Triangular Face, Don't Go Long
The prominent jaw lines of pear shaped or triangular faces accommodate most styles except those with volume at the crown. Styles that are fuller at the temple and begin to taper toward the jaw work especially well for hair styles women round faces. Thick layers will add fullness to the upper face. Long, full hair styles do not work well with this facial configuration and an off-center part is the best choice.
Diamonds Are a Jewel
With their narrow forehead, wide cheeks, and pointy chins, diamond shaped faces fall somewhere in between the heart and the oval. This combination works extremely well and like the oval will accommodate almost any hair style. The most important thing with a diamond shape is not hide your features because they're great!

Finally, Some General Tips

When women who struggle with their hair styles are told to minimize the amount of product they use, the scoffing begins. It's hard to convince product-addicted women that "product" is likely at the root of their troublesome hair. Chemical damage and chemical build-up are the number one culprits behind problem hair. With hair care, less is always better.

Choose a good quality shampoo free of harsh detergents like sodium laurite sulfate. Wash your hair every other day. Lightly condition your hair once a week. Deep condition once a month with natural oils like rosemary essential oil mixed with virgin olive oil.

Avoid using hair gels and hair sprays that contain alcohols that dry and damage your hair. If possible, let your hair air dry. Anything that heats the hair damages the hair. Finally, talk to your hair care professional about what is right for you. From black hair styles to curly hair styles, it's all about the shape of your face and what will best compliment your features.
